Frequently Asked Questions
My tea tastes bitter. What’s that all about?
Most likely it was brewed to long for your liking. Tea cooks in hot water just like any food cooks when heated, so if it’s cooked (brewed) a bit too long, it’ll bring out the astringent taste that puckers your mouth.
Some teas are naturally a bit astringent, but if you don’t like it you can try two things.
1) try brewing it for less time.
2) try placing less tea in your tea pot.

If a tea has licorice root in it, does that mean it tastes like black licorice?
No. Licorice root has been used for centuries as a natural sweetener. It doesn’t have a black licorice flavor like fennel or star anise might. Below is a picture of Catarina, which is a tea blend that contains licorice root.

If you use organic teas, why don’t you have a USDA Organic symbol on your packaging?
Sicilian Tea Company is a small independent business. The certification process is expensive, and right now I want to focus on purchasing quality organic teas from certified suppliers.
Are your teas gluten free?
Yes. All tea is gluten free naturally.
Do your teas contain dairy?
How long can I store tea before it goes bad?
Tea doesn’t spoil, but it’s best to consume your tea in 18 to 24 months for freshest taste.
How should I store my tea?
Store your tea in an air tight container in a dark place that’s kept cool. (The tins it comes in are perfect for storage.)
Is loose leaf tea better than the tea in tea bags?
Some big brands use what’s called dust or fannings. It’s literally what’s swept off the floor in a tea warehouse. The dust brews faster, but it loses the subtle flavors contained in a tea leaf.
Some companies use tea bags filled with whole leaves. Some of those tea bags are compostable in your garden and some (the “silk” kind) are only compostable in a professional composting plant.
Sicilian Tea Company doesn’t use tea bags. I believe that part of the mindful tea experience is preparation. I may one day have bagged teas so long as they’re garden compostable and don’t use staples.
Are you going to make green or white tea blends?
Yes. As Sicilian Tea Company grows, I’ll continue to roll out new blends.
