How to Brew with a Teapot

If you don’t know how to brew loose leaf tea in a teapot, you’re not alone. A lot of people I talk to are intimidated by the process, but it’s simpler than you think.

Now that you know the basics about what you need to know about brewing temperature, the amount of tea, and length of brewing, you’re ready to learn how to brew in a teapot. It’s as easy as brewing a tea bag, and you’ll have much tastier tea when you’re done.

Here are 4 easy steps to brewing loose leaf tea in a teapot.

1. Place 1-2 tsp of tea or tea blend in your strainer of choice. You’ll brew 1 tsp of tea per 8 oz of water. Or 2 tsp of tea blend or herbal blend per 8 oz. of water. Add more if you want a stronger brew.

2. Place the strainer in the teapot, then place hot water over the tea. You’ll want boiling water for black teas, and water that’s off boiling for more delicate teas like white or green. Use off boiling for delicate herbal blends like chamomile too.

3. Let the water brew for the desired length of time. You probably don’t have to brew as long as you think. For teas, you can steep between 1m-4 minutes, for tea blends, you may want to steep longer to get all the flavor out of your herbs & spices.

4. Take the tea out of the pot after you’re done brewing to avoid getting bitter tea. Using loose leaf tea gives you the benefit of re-steeping the leaves for another brew, so don’t throw them out just yet.
